Puck Puzzle - Simple Solution

This is a simple approach to solving the puck puzzle. Assuming 12 segments, coloured or numbered in some way like the diagram below, this solution should get you there.

Stage 1 - Solve Positions 12 - 7

Start by locating the piece that goes in position 12. You want to place piece 11 to the left of this one. However you get it there, your last turn has to be like the one in the diagram below. You should be aiming to move the segment to that location by rotating the centre and turning over any 6 segments other than the 12 that you have found.

Do this for numbers 10 to 7. As you go, just make sure that you never turn over the segments that you have already placed. This isn't too hard to do.

Stage 3 - Solve Positions 6 - 1

Start this stage by turning over the unsolved half to show the side with the pieces nearest to where they go.

The following move swaps two neighbouring segments and flips all of the other pieces. It does this without disturbing the order of the segments. The flipping of the segments is a little disconcerting at first. Just carry on swapping so that the right numbers are next to each other and everything will come out right.

In the image, we want to swap the two blue segments.

  • Start with the cutting plane where the white line is in the diagram.
  • Do the following 6 times
    • Turn over the right hand side of the puzzle and then rotate the centre one click to the right..
  • Rotate the whole puzzle 180° keeping it the same way up. Turn the centre one click to the right.
  • Do the following 6 times
    • Turn over the right hand side of the puzzle and then rotate the centre one click to the right..

You swap the pieces one at a time until you get them into place. It's a little laborious but it solves the puzzle. Try counting from 1-6 as you do it if you can't get the hang of this.
